AFP36 Hen and Cock Salmon leaping
Shropshire Wildlife greeting card.
Photography by Andrew Fusek Peters
“I have been coming to this spot on the banks of the river Teme near Ludlow for three years to catch the leaping salmon in my frame. When the river rises in late October and November, so do the salmon who have come back from the ocean round Greenland to spawn where they were born. They leap with a tired ferocity and most of the males and over half of the females will die when their job is done. On this day, and after my years of impatience, I was finally rewarded with the hen and cock leaping at the same time. I wanted to show context and story: the reflected bridge, the old barn, the weir, the trees going to gold and amongst us all, the salmon carrying on their life renewing work.
